Arkansas is a southern state. Its population was 2.7 million as
of 2000. In 1836 Arkansas became the 25th state.
Early French explorers gave Arkansas its name, which is
probably derived from the French word for "downriver" people, a
reference to the Quapaw people and the river along which they
settled.
The capital of Arkansas is Little Rock. Other cities include
Fayetteville, Texarkana, West Memphis, Hot Springs, Jonesboro,
and Pine Bluff.
