History of Highland
Famed for the Scottish Highlands,
this area has become one of Utah's
fastest growing communities. It
began as a small 15 family
settlement. Highland was settled in
1853. It was finally officially
incorporated as a city on July 13,

Highland was settled by homesteaders in the 1870s.
It was named by Scottish Mormon immigrants who felt
the area resembled the highlands of Scotland.

of 15,523. The median age was 22.
As of the census of 2000, there were 8,172
people, 1,804 households, and 1,733 families
residing in the city. The population density was
1,174.0 people per square mile (453.3/km²). There
were 1,864 housing units at an average density of
267.8 per square mile (103.4/km²).
There were 1,804 households out of which 66.5%
had children under the age of 18 living with them,
90.6% were married couples living together, 4.0% had
a female householder with no husband present, and

made up of individuals and 1.7% had someone living
alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average
household size was 4.53 and the average family size
was 4.64.
