Provo Government

Provo city is administered by a council of seven and a single mayor. Five of the council seats are elected by individual districts of the city while two of the seats are elected by the city as a whole. These elected officials serve a term of four years, with elections alternating every two years. The seats of Council Members Midge Johnson, Cynthia Dayton, and Sherrie Hall Everett are up for election in 2011. No incumbents are seeking re-election

History of Provo

Provo was named for the French-Canadian explorer, Etienne Provost. He, with his party, explored the area in 1825. He named the river here for himself, calling it the Provo River. Settlers from Salt Lake City came here in 1849 due in part to the reports from his explorations. By 1875, the railroad had connected Provo with Salt Lake City. Brigham Young University was established only two years later, in 1877, to help train teachers for the Mormon communities. It has become one of the largest private universities in the world with over 28,000 students from all over the globe. Provo is a cultural and educational hub for this area of the west.
